Beaver

For those of you who read my column or have read my book, I’m sure you know the love and respect I’ve always had for my very dear friend, Tony Dow. He will forever remain in my heart.

Losing those whom we love will always be one of life’s most difficult challenges. And thinking of Tony, I’m sure all will remember the TV show “Leave It To Beaver.” Jerry Mathers had the starring role of Beaver Cleaver.

He is now 75 years old, happily married for the 3rd time and has 3 children. He started out as a child model at 2, and did several other TV shows, but it was Leave It To Beaver, that made him famous.

I first met Jerry Mathers (along with Tony) when I did an episode called “The Blind Date Committee.” It was about “Wally” being in charge of the committee.

His job was trying to get a date for me, but to no avail. Everyone he asked would not take me out since I wasn’t popular in school.

There is a scene in which Beaver (fondly called “The Beave”) and his friend decide to ring my doorbell to take a look at me. They then run away and report to Wally.

There’s also a funny scene where Wally then asks the Beave if I’m ugly. He shakes his head “No.” Wally then asks if I’m pretty, to which he once again shakes his head “No.”

Wally finally asks him what I look like and Beaver replies, “Kinda like Nuthin.”

My scene with Jerry was very brief, so I never really got to know him well. And (of course) at the time, I had a huge crush on Tony Dow, since he was more my age.

Over the years, I never ran into Jerry but kept up a wonderful friendship with Tony.

I saw Jerry recently at a gathering and we caught up and shared stories—mostly about Tony. I loved seeing him after all these years.

We reminisced about our scene together 64 years ago… Ah, sweet memories. How very blessed I am.

Until next time, remember, a hug is the one present that’s always worth giving. MSN
