UM Jazz Artist Series Kicks off 2nd Year
with Jazz at Lincoln Center Artist
Missoula, MT

The University of Montana Jazz Program is excited to announce the kickoff of the 2nd Year of the UM Jazz Artist Series with a member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, woodwind artist Victor Goines and his quartet. Joining Mr. Goines will be one of the finest pianists in the nation, Missoula’s own David Morgenroth. This spectacular performance will be on Wednesday, September 7th at 7:30pm in the Music Building Recital Hall on the Campus of the University of Montana.

In addition to Goines and Morgenroth, the Jazz Quartet will feature Chicago based bass player Emma Dayhuff (originally from Bozeman) and drummer Greg Artry. All the musicians have international experience performing and educating musicians bringing their respect for the tradition and original yet swinging music.

The University of Montana Jazz Program and the UM Jazz Artist Series will once again welcome some of the greatest international jazz artists this year including concerts on November 18th with Vocalist and Master of Ceremonies, Huey Lewis, the 5th Annual Holiday Swing on December 10th with Missoula’s own woodwind artist, Gary Herbig and capping off series the 37th Annual UM Buddy DeFranco Jazz Festival to be held on March 16th & 17th, 2017.

In November, the UM Jazz Program is proud to present a fundraiser “When Jazz Was King” with Master of Ceremonies, vocalist and jazz enthusiast Huey Lewis. This special event will highlight the UM Jazz Program with the Jazz Ensemble I performing music of meaningful jazz artists who have made a lasting impression. Hosted by Huey Lewis, this dinner and show event will have separate ticket prices (for more information please call 406.243.6880).

On December 10th, the UM Jazz Program welcomes back from Los Angeles, Odyssey of the Stars woodwind recording artist and alum Gary Herbig. Gary will perform holiday favorites along with adding some old swing favorites from the UM Cabaret. Don’t miss this fantastic evening at the Missoula Winery.

The 2017 UM Buddy DeFranco Jazz Festival guest artists are among the rare breed of artists at home educating and performing all over the world. The festival welcomes Denver based pianist Dana Landry, from Seattle Jim Sisko (tpt), Dallas saxophonist Brad Leali (sax), Ashley Summers (bass) and on drum set from New York, Chris Smith. Both evenings will feature outstanding high school and middle school performers from the daytime activities along with the UM Jazz Ensemble and other surprises. It is an honor to welcome these guest musicians and over 850 students to Missoula for this very special event.

The emphasis of the jazz series is on performance, education, improvisation and the jazz language. Additionally, there will be clinics and master classes with the guest artists.
