Montana Endowment Credit

A Win-Win for You and Montana

By Mary Rutherford, President & CEO, Montana Community Foundation

What do you love most about our beautiful state? Perhaps it’s the endless rivers, the majestic 3,500 mountain peaks, the friendly wave from a passerby on a dirt road, or the way our communities come together to support one another. The reasons to love Montana are as diverse as its landscape. Imagine a way to support our communities, people, and non-profits forever through endowments. You can have a lasting impact on Montana through a charitable endowment that supports what you care about most. In return, you can earn tax credits towards your Montana income tax. It’s a win-win.

Both businesses and individuals can benefit from the Montana Endowment Tax Credit (METC). This credit provides donors—whether individuals or businesses—with an above-the-line credit on their Montana income tax. Individuals and couples who make a planned gift to a qualified charitable endowment can receive a tax credit equal to 40% of the planned gift’s value. For businesses, a tax credit of 20% of the direct gift’s value is available. The maximum allowable tax credits are $15,000 for individuals, $30,000 for couples, and $15,000 for businesses.

This is a tremendous opportunity to provide charitable support to Montana. By utilizing the METC, you not only gain a tax credit but also help create a charitable investment endowment that provides lasting benefits to your community. You can participate in the METC by making a planned gift of $2,500 or more to one of the 1,400 qualified charitable endowments at the Montana Community Foundation, or we can assist you in establishing a new endowment. As the endowed fund grows, its returns will continuously support the organizations and causes important to you.

As Montana’s statewide community foundation, we are committed to cultivating a culture of giving so Montana communities can flourish. Our Philanthropy Team is ready to talk with you about your charitable giving options. We can provide gift illustrations to show you how you might incorporate the METC into your charitable giving and make a lasting impact in Montana. MSN
