Friendly neighbors during the holidays

By Wanda Haynes

“Tis the season to be jolly. Fa, la, la, la, la.”

Well, you know how the song goes. As the once cool fall air turns cold and bitter, we scramble to pull out our warm winter clothing. We sit by a roaring fire and enjoy a bowl of freshly popped corn.

The new season brings many opportunities to snuggle up.

It isn’t the annual dates on the calendar or the weather man that predicts winter. It’s the sudden appearance of snowflakes. They flutter and dance through the air like frosty bits of confetti.

Each snowflake is of its own unique design. Despite these differences they unite to create a blanket of white. They loan themselves to the creativity of children as they build the perfect snowman.

The charm of snow wears off quickly for most of us. Then we begin to think about how we will celebrate the holidays.

How much do we spend? What will be on the holiday menu? Some of us feel guilty if we can’t accommodate everyone on our shopping list; often going into debt by purchasing gifts that we simply can’t afford. The media furthers the guilt by bombarding us with images of Christmas shopping. The Holiday season has the potential to be so much more.

There is a rewarding way to spend this amazing time of year:

  • By watching the gleam in a child’s eye as they await St. Nick to scurry down the chimney.
  • The pleasure of receiving cards and letters wishing us a bright and prosperous new year!
  • Offering grace to neighbors that are ill and perhaps shut-in by shoveling their snow.
  • Spending quality time with friends and family.
  • Wishing those whose paths we cross a joyful season.

Christmas is to be a part of our heart posture and shared with others. These are holiday treasures, peace, and goodwill toward men. MSN
