Surprising study shows lower crash rate among older drivers

With more aging seniors getting behind the wheel, you would think they would be involved in an increasing percentage of accidents and fatalities. A new study released today finds just the opposite: fatal crash rates are declining among older drivers.
The 37% decline in fatal crashes involving drivers who are older than 70 over the 9-year study period exceeded the 23% decline in drivers age 35 to 54, finds the study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. It looked at crashes between 1997 and 2008. Even non-fatal accidents declined for the oldsters while they increased slightly for middle-aged drivers. Yet more seniors are on the road, and more are coming as boomers age.
